The most useful breastfeeding essentials

  • A nursing pillow

Breastfeeding pillows are among the essentials that can make breastfeeding your baby easier. It helps carry the weight of your baby, it also makes latching easier and reduces the burden of the breast's weight. This pillow is excellent for moms who just had a c-section, it is noteworthy that in case of a cesarean birth, it is recommended to use the side breastfeeding position, also known as the football position. There are also nursing pillows for twin feeding, the most popular pillow is the C-shaped nursing pillow. I always recommend getting a medium-firm pillow that is not too firm, nor too soft. The pillow helps you to experiment with different breastfeeding positions, you can use it to support your baby when he first starts sitting, and they are also great for tummy time under your supervision of course.

  • A nursing bra

Choosing a good quality nursing bra that fits properly is paramount. Wearing a too-tight bra can put pressure on your breasts leading to clogging the milk ducts, and eventually an infection. It is also imperative not to wear a too-loose bra to get the support needed for growing breasts. Breastfeeding while wearing a nursing bra is much easier than while wearing a regular bra.

  • Breast pads

These round-shaped pads can be inserted in your bra to absorb the milk leaking while you are not nursing. They are very useful especially for a working mom, saving her unnecessary embarrassment. These pads can either be disposable or reusable, I recommend washing the reusable ones and drying them properly before using them again, It is also important to change the pads once they are soaked with milk and not to leave them for a long time to avoid any fungal infection.

  • Lanolin creams

These ointments are among the most useful breastfeeding essentials, I recommend using them for all nursing moms. Lanolin cream is safe for babies, you don’t need to wash it off before nursing if the ingredient is only lanolin. Washing the breast repeatedly can cause dryness and irritation and may lead to infections. Lanolin moisturizes the nipples, especially in the first few days postpartum, it helps in easing any pain or discomfort making breastfeeding easier.

  • Breast pumps

Breast pumps can be extremely helpful, but there are so many different types that serve different needs, especially for working moms and mothers of twins, or if the baby goes on a nursing strike. We can’t say, however, that breastfeeding is impossible without them. If you decide to use a pump I recommend you buy it before your delivery so that you can use it right away in case you need it.

  • Silicone colostrum collector

This excellent product helps new moms in collecting the amazingly beneficial colostrum and give it to the newborn without the need to use a bottle and risk any nipple confusion.
