Tips for moms during back-to-school season

1| Overcome Anxiety

Encourage your children to express their opinions openly and make them feel they can talk to you freely about how they think about going to school. Don't scold them if they tell you they do not want to go to school; listen to their reasons, discuss them with them in detail, and ask them to suggest solutions to the obstacles they fear. For example, if your child is afraid of not making new friends, ask him to devise a way or a game to help him make friends. Share with him your experience on your first day of school; this will bring you and your child closer and break down the barriers of Anxiety you both have.

Make sure not to share your fears and concerns about going to school with your child, as he looks to you as a source of reassurance. It is essential to remain calm and positive in front of your child when dealing with the idea of going to school, especially on the first day of school.

2| Meet the teachers

Positive communication between home and school is the cornerstone of a successful school experience. Teachers are the most essential element in your child's school experience, so building bridges with them early before they are busy during the school year is vital. Teachers usually start at least a week before students do. If your child's school doesn't have a pre-school orientation, contact the administration to suggest this idea. You can also take your child to school, visit his classroom, greet the teachers, and introduce yourself and your child. Getting your child to know his teachers before school starts will break down the barriers of anticipation and Anxiety and help him start his school year with less stress.

3| Help your child make friends

Ask the school to introduce you to the parents of students who will be your child's classmates next school year so that he can get to know them and try to make friends even before the school year begins. You can also communicate with mothers with children in your child's class through the different mothers' groups on WhatsApp or Facebook. When your child starts the school year and already has friends, it will be easier for him to adapt to school faster, especially if this is his first year.

4| Encourage your child to set goals

The most outstanding and successful students are the children with a clear life goal. The goal does not have to be big and far-fetched, such as the child becoming an astronaut. Instead, simple and short-term goals are the most important, such as reading a new book weekly, strengthening math skills, writing a story, and other goals. Before school starts, encourage your children to write five goals for this school year, write them in a notebook, and put them on a board in their rooms. Talk to them about a plan to achieve these goals. Setting goals will ensure your child's success and excellence during the school year.

5| Learning is more important than grades

The main goal of sending children to school is to learn to acquire knowledge and various skills, not to get high grades. Therefore, parents should focus on how their children benefit, develop, and improve their skills rather than getting grades. This does not mean neglecting to study and play all day long; on the contrary, it is important for children to realize that their parents are interested in their Learning and studying. Therefore, following up on children, supervising their studies at home, and preparing a nice place to study is essential. Even if parents cannot teach their children, their interest in their children's studies is enough for them to progress academically.

6| Be prepared

Ensure your child goes back to school the first week with all the school supplies he needs in his school bag—files, notebooks, pens, etc. At home, get your child used to keeping his books and school supplies in their designated place so that he does not forget to take them to school on the days he needs them.

7| Encourage your children to read

Reading is one of the most essential skills that help children excel in their studies, as it effectively builds their language skills, develops comprehension skills, and enhances concentration. It also broadens the child's horizons and stimulates his imagination. Therefore, it is recommended that children be encouraged to read for at least half an hour a day. They are talking to them and discussing what they have read to develop their communication skills. From my personal experience, encouraging my children to read has contributed significantly to their academic excellence at various levels, and reading has also shaped their personalities positively.

8| Provide healthy nutrition

Ensure you provide a healthy breakfast low in sugar, protein, and fiber. Don't forget to put healthy snacks, fresh fruits, and vegetables in the lunch box to ensure wholesome nutrition for your child while he is at school. Always remind your child to take a water bottle with him to drink water, especially when playing outside, and most importantly, to bring the bottle back home instead of searching for it every day in the lost and found basket at school.

9| Deep breaths

Take a deep breath, look at this period with enthusiasm and positive anticipation, and avoid any anxiety or negative influence. Do not waste time and effort asking questions about your child's teacher or school. The child's school experience should be free of stress and tension. For your child to have an enjoyable and beneficial school year, you must enter it with optimism and positivity.

To sum up,

The beginning of the school year brings with it a range of different feelings for both mothers and children. In addition to the excitement and anticipation for the start of a new phase, the atmosphere is sometimes filled with Anxiety, especially when the first child goes to school. If you or your child are anxious about the back-to-school season, don't feel surprised or frustrated, as this is very normal, especially when joining a new school or academic stage. But with good preparation and focus on everything beautiful and cheerful, returning to school will be easy and enjoyable.
